Adapted from the video game series of the same name, NiNoKuni follows high school peers Yuu and Haru who must travel between two separate yet parallel worlds to help save their childhood friend, Kotona, whose life is in danger. The year is 1987 and Japan is just reaching the peak of its economic success. Eighteen-year old Yonosuke Yokomichi arrives in Tokyo from Nagasaki. Ordinary in every way possible, he lives in a suburb far from the excitement of the big city and commutes to a university in the center of Tokyo.

Daisuke Yuge works as a tour guide in Oahu, Hawaii and also studies astronomy. He meets Rui Fujishima at a cafe and falls in love with her at first sight, but Rui Fujishima suffers from memory loss due to a past accident.

Newly divorced Naoko returns to her hometown to work at beauty salon Permanent Nobara, which is run by her mother. Permanent Nobara is situated in a small village by the sea and the only beauty salon in the area. The women from the village go to Permanent Nobara to talk about their love lives and troubles. Masako loves her husband, but her husband cheats on her. Tomo keeps dating other men, but is betrayed by the guys she dates. The other women tell Tomo that "it's better than not dating." Meanwhile, Naoko, who has returned to to her hometown with her daughter, begins a relationship with Kashima. Mr. Kashima is Naoko's first love and her high school teacher. They share a secret ....
