The film is a social drama, with its plot around university professor Dr. Kumar (Ashok Kumar), who lives with his wife Padma (Bhanumati), his drunkard son Jyoti (Raaj Kumar), outgoing daughter Chitra (Tanuja) and his friend's daughter Rekha (Mala Sinha). Dr. Kumar and his wife have a different outlook towards life, with him preferring books and philosophy, while his wife Padma prefers social gatherings and society clubs. Padma never considered Jyoti her son, who works as a mill designer, a profession she considers too poor to acknowledge. Chitra is encouraged by her mother to mingle freely in high society, much to the disappointment of her worried father.

They kidnap Princess Chitralekha (Waheeda Rehman) unknowingly, and call her Jwala. Meanwhile, Bharat's dad (Balraj Sahni) who is the Inspector General, does not approve of Bharat's rebellious nature and decides to arrest him on sight. Bharat's mom (Kamini Kaushal) is torn between the love for her husband and her son. Bharat determination against the Diwan is so strong that he decides to bomb-blast a railway train transporting the Diwan, knowingly that his own dad is also travelling on that train. Will Bharat break his mom's heart by killing his dad and the Diwan? Good acting scores by the entire caste make this movie worth watching. Lyrics by Indivar.

Widower Sudhangsu is going to be married with Soma, daughter of Sir Haraprasad. Sudhangsu declares that his first wife Kalpana committed suicide on a railway track in Burma, stating that she was mentally challenged. At the time of the marriage rituals a local advocate, Suren Banerjee, comes with a lady who claims that she herself is Kalpana and that Sudhangshu is committing bigamy. Sudhangsu strongly denies and claims that she is an imposter. In the meantime a mysterious person name Samadder invaded Sudhangsu's house and stole some ornaments of the deceased Kalpana.
