The film is a social drama, with its plot around university professor Dr. Kumar (Ashok Kumar), who lives with his wife Padma (Bhanumati), his drunkard son Jyoti (Raaj Kumar), outgoing daughter Chitra (Tanuja) and his friend's daughter Rekha (Mala Sinha). Dr. Kumar and his wife have a different outlook towards life, with him preferring books and philosophy, while his wife Padma prefers social gatherings and society clubs. Padma never considered Jyoti her son, who works as a mill designer, a profession she considers too poor to acknowledge. Chitra is encouraged by her mother to mingle freely in high society, much to the disappointment of her worried father.

Bharat (Rajendra Kumar) is a patriotic young man for whom patritism does not stop anywhere. He comes to know of the tyrancy of the present ruler's Diwan (Ajit) and he and his colleagues (Soodesh Kumar, Rajendra Nath) rebel. They kidnap Princess Chitralekha (Waheeda Rehman) unknowingly, and call her Jwala. Meanwhile, Bharat's dad (Balraj Sahni) who is the Inspector General, does not approve of Bharat's rebellious nature and decides to arrest him on sight. Bharat's mom (Kamini Kaushal) is torn between the love for her husband and her son. Bharat determination against the Diwan is so strong that he decides to bomb-blast a railway train transporting the Diwan, knowingly that his own dad is also travelling on that train. Will Bharat break his mom's heart by killing his dad and the Diwan? Good acting scores by the entire caste make this movie worth watching. Lyrics by Indivar.

Widower Sudhangsu is going to be married with Soma, daughter of Sir Haraprasad. Sudhangsu declares that his first wife Kalpana committed suicide on a railway track in Burma, stating that she was mentally challenged. At the time of the marriage rituals a local advocate, Suren Banerjee, comes with a lady who claims that she herself is Kalpana and that Sudhangshu is committing bigamy. Sudhangsu strongly denies and claims that she is an imposter. In the meantime a mysterious person name Samadder invaded Sudhangsu's house and stole some ornaments of the deceased Kalpana.

Dr. Ravi returns from abroad and takes up position as Chief Surgeon in a hospital. He then meets with Nurse Shanti, who lives an impoverished lifestyle with her ailing mother, and decides to perform surgery, but she passes away, and a guilt-ridden Ravi marries Shanti much to the chagrin of his mentor, Kaka, who had hoped that he would marry his daughter, Rajni. The couple then travel to Kashmir for their honey-moon, and then settle down to a harmonious relationship. Hoping to travel even more, their plans are interrupted by the hospital's head doctor, who wants Ravi to focus on cancer research. The couple drop all travel plans and immerse themselves in research so much so that Shanti herself becomes ill.

Trouble ensues when an eccentric but simple-minded villager discovers he is the only living heir of a royal estate.

The film explores the tragic fall of feudalism in Bengal during the British Raj. The title of the movie and the story is a reference to the plot simultaneously exploring a platonic relationship between a beautiful, forlorn wife of an aristocrat and a career-driven clerk.

Nupur Chatterji has fled from her home in Delhi, resisting an arranged marriage with a man she dislikes. She comes to Calcutta to her college friend, but as her home is not safe she takes shelter in the house of one Anjan Mukherjee. The plot revolves with series of flashbacks which reveals a judge's past and hidden secretes. Gyanendra, a judge lives with his wife Sarama. Being the Judge, every time of trial of similar cases he remembers his past, the truth about his questionable actions. Gyanendra always recalls when he was a popular lawyer, married to Sumoti, a suspicious and rude lady. But he had a weak feelings for his professor's daughter Sarama. One day Gyanendra's house was burnt and his first wife Sumoti dies. Gyanendra could not make any attempt to save her perhaps he was unable bear Sumati further. Thereafter he marries Sarama and becomes a judge but he realizes his crime and those past haunts him much.

A young law student is forced into an arranged marriage though he is in love with somebody else. Following the wedding the drama focuses on the bride's mistaken identity and the search for her husband.
