It is 1940 in Norway, a neutral, peace-loving country that is invaded by Nazi Germany. A gang of Norwegian children do what Norwegian children like best - ski. They are actually rescuing Norwegian gold from the nazi invaders. The Nazis search all adults but don't suspect children playing. The children carry the gold, one bar at a time, across the mountains to a fishing boat. It is a race against time, it is spring and the snow is melting. So they ski from dawn to dusk every day.

In his travels he meets and falls in love with Liss, a liberated small town woman, but they both have trouble considering a long-term commitment which will curtail their treasured freedom. After separating, Claus heads north and joins a surveying team, where he finds himself attracted to a country girl. Will the big city boy settle down in the rugged wilds of the Northlands, or will he return to the south and negotiate a commitment to Liss.

This leads to a lot of comic misunderstandings, not the least because the owner of the company himself falls for the new young wife.
