Inevitably there is drama and tragedy. The film is set in an early 20th century Dutch fishing village with local period costume and colour.

Through flashbacks we see her arriving on stage as a young girl with her father Nap de la Mar. We see her as a stage star, on the movie set, as a diva with her own theater... and in her downfall, in the wake of a suicide attempt after her husband's death.
