They come together when their spouses run off together. The ending helps redeem this slight film, watchable only because of the great stars.

The film is the immediate continuation of Un éléphant ça trompe énormément, released the previous year. Having fortuitously discovered a photograph in which Marthe embraces someone unknown, clothed with a chequed jacket, Étienne Dorsay becomes jealous, and imagines various stratagems to identify the lover. In the meantime, Étienne and his friends acquire a weekend house for a very low price. As in the previous work, the film is largely narrated by the character Étienne, whose tone shifts with the reality of the images. The film contains a certain number of allusions to the films of Blake Edwards (the Pink Panther series).

Martial (Daniel Auteuil) is discharged from a mental insitution where he spent a few years due to a serious nervous breakdown. Upon his return he finds his mother (Danielle Darrieux), a busy business woman who owns a supermarket chain. She's convinced that her son, whom by now hardly talks to anyone after his experience, will be able to find himself again if tasked with some responsibilities. Soon enough, he's sent to Limoges on a business trip to check on one of their stores in the hope to reinvigorate the failing business. Once he arrives, Martial is faced with responsibilities he had never imagined, including dealing with the store's personnel.
