A ship runs aground on a mysterious atoll leading to an investigation by insurance representative Kusanagi, who discovers an ancient bead that he gives to his daughter Asagi. Director/screenwriter 'Shinobu Hashimoto' was given carte blanche to make this film based on his three-decade record of success, including being a screenwriter for Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950). This movie was greenlighted sight unseen by the studio. When it failed, Hashimoto retired permanently from film.

Ryo came from Aomori Prefecture to Tokyo. He works as a window washer for high-rise buildings. For his job, he uses a gondola to clean the windows.
